be a STAGE MOM
Our tiny dancers, mini movers, kids in motion and advanced combo classes need stage moms to assist with getting their groups to and from the dressing room and backstage. If you are able to assist us, please contact the office.
T-SHIRTS
Recital t-shirts that have been pre-ordered and paid, can be picked up at the dress rehearsal. There will be a table set up on the second level inside the theatre. A very limited amount of extra shirts will be available for sale on a first come, first served basis. Please put your child's name inside the t-shirt, so they don't get mixed with others in the dressing rooms.
5, 10 & 15 year TROPHIES
Each year we celebrate dancers who have had five, ten, or fifteen years of dance with special trophies. These BIG trophies are presented on stage at the end of each show.
Participation Trophies: If you are interested in ordering a participation trophy for your dancer, please contact the office. The $12 charge will be applied to your dance account. Participation trophies may be picked up in the theater lobby on the day of the recital.
RECITAL DVD
Randy and Jolei Higgins provide a DVD of our recital each year. You may pre-purchase a DVD at the rehearsal at their sales table on the second level during dress rehearsal. DVDs are $35. DVDs purchased after the show will be $40. They accept cash, card, Venmo and PayPal payments.
Jolei will be taking candid pictures during dress rehearsal of dancers and moms for a montage on the DVD.
LOCATION
Dress rehearsal and recital are held at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex located at 1 Richard Arrington Jr Blvd N, Birmingham, AL 35203 in the 1,000 seat Theatre.
If you need directions or parking information, you can print a map at www.bjcc.org. The closest entrance to the theater is from the 19th street or 11th avenue north parking lot.
REHEARSAL
Thursday, May 30 - Friday, May 31, 2024
Review the list of times for each class under the recital documents on this page. When you arrive use the backstage door at the BJCC and proceed to the large dressing room in the Ballet Rehearsal Hall (follow the signs.) Armbands and tickets ARE NOT REQUIRED for Dress Rehearsal.
Dancers should be dressed and ready in their costume for their first dance number 15 minutes prior to the designated start time on the rehearsal schedule so rehearsals can begin promptly.
All students must stay in their dressing area until called for their time to rehearse. An SSDC staff member will assist each class from the dressing room to the backstage area. The parent responsible for assisting their child should then proceed to the theater to watch their dancer’s rehearsal.
After the first dance is complete, parents will need to go back to the dressing room to assist their child with the costume change for the next dance.
Once your child has completed their rehearsals, please collect all of their costumes, shoes and accessories.
Before you leave you will be given a tour of the dressing room area, shown your assigned dressing room, and introduced to your stage mom for the recital.
RECITAL
Matinee: Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 10:00 am
Evening: Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 3:00 pm
Dancers will need to use the backstage door at the BJCC and proceed to their assigned dressing room. Dancers and parents/adults who are assisting in the backstage dressing rooms must have the backstage armband visible on recital day for admittance through the backstage door. This is a security measure we have in place for the safety of our dancers. No dads or male family members allowed backstage.
When it's time to perform, a stage mom or SSDC staff member will assist each class from the dressing room to the backstage area. The parent/adult responsible for assisting their dancer in the dressing room should then proceed to the audience to watch their child perform. After the first dance is complete, parents will need to go back to the dressing room to assist their child with the costume change for the next dance.
COSTUMES
Bring ALL costumes, shoes and accessories to dress rehearsal and recital. THERE ARE NO EXTRAS! All costumes, shoes and accessories need to be labeled with your child’s name. There will be many dancers sharing the same dressing room space.
Make sure headpieces are secure so they will not fall off on stage.
Please have plenty of bobby pins and safety pins. Straps must be on all ballet shoes.
NO UNDERGARMENTS ARE TO BE WORN UNDER TIGHTS!

Recital tickets can be purchased by dancers whose accounts are paid in full. If you have a balance on your account, please email the studio office or login to your SSDC account to pay the balance online. Tickets can be purchased for family and friends at the dance studio during the last week of classes, at the dress rehearsal or at the theater door before the shows begin. The studio office will be closed the week of the recital.
